PET TALK  by Cathy Davis

I love cats.  Is that any surprise to anyone?  I think I love them because they are so fiercely independent.  I love to hear a cat purr; I know it will bring my blood pressure down 20 points.  I love to have a cat give me a massage, although my cat Boo will often bring out her claws in her kneading ecstasy.

My preference is adult cats.  That’s likely because I’m lazy more than anything else. Kittens and puppies require a lot of attention, a lot of play time, and they have just a little more energy than I can handle in my twilight years.

But many people adore kittens, they want to bring a new pet into the home that has no past “history”, they want a kitten that they can play with and cuddle with and know it will grow up with their family imprint and fit into their family lifestyle.

If you are one of those people, have I got a deal for you.   At the animal shelter right now we have Kelly, a 12 week old female orange and white domestic short hair kitten, oh my word she is just gorgeous, you can’t help but love her.

We have Kirk, an 8 week old domestic short hair tiger and white, another sweetie. And we have five kittens that are medium haired, one gray, one gray and white, one tiger, one smaller tiger and one black and white that will all be ready in two weeks, all little love bugs just eager to join your family.

We have three part coon kittens that came from a feral mother, the kittens are a little skittish but with some tender loving care will come around quickly.  My mom would have loved these guys, she had a heart for saving the “almost wild” and socializing them, she would have them eating out of her hand in no time.

We have a part Maine Coon long haired female named Ginger who is ready for adoption now and four litters that won’t be ready for about four weeks but you can come put your names on them now.

We also have some beautiful dogs; one in particular I can’t believe is still with us.  He is probably just a year or so old, part beagle and part basset and he is just a sweetheart, very loving friendly dog, good with kids and other animals, but he is still a puppy and a real lively puppy at that.  He likes to chew and dig, but all puppies do that, he just needs some training.  He will make someone a really good pet.

We still have Vinnie, he is a boxer-pit mix and with the right trainer will make a loyal and loving companion.  He is shy with some men and very nervous if cornered so we are looking for just the right home for Vinnie.   Vinnie can’t go into a situation where he is tied outside all day, this will make him aggressive, and we would prefer he not go into a home with small children.

If you’ve never taken a look at our pets, you are invited to join us at the animal shelter any day from 11 am to 4 pm to take a tour and visit with our family.  This has been a wonderful week, already 6 animals have been adopted out and that’s just what we like to hear.  If we could just adopt out two a day, it would not take any time to re-home all of these healthy beautiful animals.

If you have access to a computer, I invite you to check out our website to see what’s available for adoption and what’s coming up for special projects.  Funding this year is down because of the economy and we struggle from week to week just to cover payroll checks so it’s imperative that we keep having more and more fund raisers.  Coming right up is the strawberry shortcake sale during Midnight Madness.  We will also be raffling off some fabulous baskets made and donated by friends from Delaware!

If you have not received your membership invitation and would like to become a member, you can either give the Shelter a call at 532-2862 and we’ll mail you a membership application, or you can mail your check to the Shelter and just write “membership” on the check.  Family membership is $25.  The funds go a long way to help us care for all these critters until new homes are found.

Thank you for your support.
